Fast forward to 9 minutes in to the beginning of the segment on Rachel, a survivor of the 7/7 London train bombings. Her blog about her experience inside one of the bombed cars got her in the cross hairs of the 7/7 conspiracy theorists. They believe a power surge in the Underground caused the deadly explosions and that the government concocted a cover up pinning it on Muslims. When Rachel confronts the conspiracy theorists, they attack her and claim she is a composite character created by MI5 to spread disinformation. The piece opens a window into the mentality and intractability of conspiracy theorists. There's simply no arguing with them.

I don't what it is that has people latch on so strongly to conspiracy theories. Perhaps it's freeing in some way. If you believe that the government is so powerful that they could set charges in buildings, disappear a commercial jet, shoot missiles into office buildings, murder thousands of Americans and then cover the whole thing up then really what can you do? You're truly powerless. Sure takes a load off. It is a seductive absolution. And, on the flip-side, you get to feel special that you know the truth.

There is a difference between Democrats and Republicans.

Democrats believe dogs should ride on the inside of the car. It all starts with the songs, and these ones are solidly strong. Then comes the production, which is phenomenal. The man knows how to construct compelling soundscapes that serve as ideal foundations for his songs without overwhelming them. Unlike other self-hatched projects, this one flows with a soulful and organic integrity that is manna for the heart. "Married To A Mystery," based on a famous quote by Leonard Cohen about songwriting ("If I knew where the good songs came from, I'd go there more often. It's much like the life of a Catholic nun; you're married to a mystery.") has a delicately unfolding melody that grabs you by the heart and doesn't let go. Wherever good songs come from, Stone went there for this one. Its elusive melody erupts into a golden chorus that gets better with every listening. Rolling rhythms propel the declamatory lyrics into a rich vocal tapestry and explosively elegant guitar solo. (Mr. Cohen has heard the song, and praised Noah for its honesty.) "Paula" is a wistful poem of sad jubilance; the sorrow of lost love mingled with the joyful connection with the past. The title song weds a restrained fervor with a martial drum-bass groove and shape-shifting textures that contrast the inconsequence of mundane techno-times with the eternal hunger for change, a yearning etched by a haunting ascending riff. "Unshakeable" has a lithe Lindsey Buckingham-like melodic dynamism bolstered by a cumbersome-buoyant bass-thick groove; it's light and heavy simultaneously, and like all of these songs and tracks, is evidence of a serious artist at work, and at play. -Paul Zollo

My album is now available on Napster and Rhapsody! Who's at MIDEM? Is the debate really just
free or pay? Is anyone talking about delivery methods that feel free
and compensate creators?

Here's something from BMI:

>“50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” – 1976 Pop Award/Million-Air [2million]

Paul Simon has a bunch of these awards signifying 2 million radio
plays (in this case, since 1976).

Big whoop. She Wants Revenge has 4.7 million plays on Myspace IN 2006! But
there's no system in place to pay for those performances.

Now, there is a distinction between a single radio play which is heard by many people at once and an Internet stream which is singular. And there are other distinctions between broadcast spins and myspace listens as well. Broadcast spins you could say are passive listens. Perhaps there are 10,000 people listening at one time but not all of them like Paul Simon or respond to the song by making an LP purchase. Myspace listens are [mostly] active. In the old/current model, radio is looked at as promotion and advertisement for a product. The labels gave it away, thus no performance royalty for a sound recording. The industry is continuing to look at myspace plays as advertisements for CDs. The problem is, the CD is on the way out. For many kids, myspace IS the product (a crappy 96kbps product at that). The primary experience of a band may be their myspace page, youtube video, and, when they're in town, a live show.

Eventually where it will go (or ought to go) is some sort of entertainment fee bundled into your TV/Internet/sat radio/mobile device service that is distributed to copyright holders based on actual plays. And for the consumer, it feels free. The CD is over. A model based on advertising for a $14 piece of plastic is over no matter how hard they sue. And totally free music is unacceptable. One may disagree, but I'm sure the film/TV industries are not going to go down as quietly. In fact, this may all get settled by them 5 years from now. In the meantime, I worry that writers and performers will be undermined by an industry jamming an old model on a new reality.

No, you can't ask people to pay directly for music. The experience
of music has changed no matter how much the powers that be wish it
hadn't. The debate shouldn't be free or pay. It should be how do we
make it work.

Noah Stone, the MUSIC blog

Yes, this is the first post of the new, improved Noah Stone, the blog.... nay, the music blog. I'll be using this as a place to post not only my music but music I'm into.

So, to get started, here is a brand new song of mine, Work With You. I wrote and recorded this last week. The ping-pongy, noodley guitar is my good friend, Yogi.

And, here's an old Jane Siberry, or I should say, Issa (she has changed her name), song, Lena Is a White Table from the 1988 album The Walking. I must warn you that it's very 80's and very strange. The song is a conversation between two people, each panned left and right. They are giving directions to someone, "First you go up the hill... Don't forget to say the church... The Church? Well I don't think... Just in case the miss the turn... Let me do the talking... You make mistakes sometimes... Well, so do you... You never let me talk... Yeah, drink your beer..." And then there's some misunderstanding about who Lena is. One of them is saying she should go to school, but she can't because she is a table. Lena is a white table.

All songs are posted for sampling purposes and will be removed by request. Please support artists and buy the albums.

Shop

Come on...

The winner of American Idol received more votes than any president in the history of the United States.

Why is there a genocide in Africa? Why are global temperatures rising? Why can't there be peace? Look inside yourselves, America.

* Okay, I've looked into it some more. Although he did receive more votes than any American President, people could vote as many times as they liked. Whereas, in the Presidential election, each person can only vote once (expect for Florida and possibly Ohio). Also, it's not totally clear if Taylor Hicks himself received 63 million votes or if all the contestants received 63 million votes total. Anyway, it's not really a fair comparison but I still think Americans have a dangerously undeveloped caring muscle.

Good company

I was looking at the index of this book about the Napster days. It's all making sense now. If you're on a plane at 37,000 feet and someone lets loose hundreds of poisonous snakes, what are you going to do, jump? Nope, there's nothing you can do about it. No sense in complaining. Snakes on a plane, man.

My brother named me after Noah, the Boa Constrictor from Richard Scarry's Busy Busy World. I was looking online for the guy, but he was nowhere to be found. Busy Busy World is out of print probably due to the 70's-era ethnic insensitivity. Incidentally, I listened to this podcast that opined on what this book would look like if was written today: A bunch of anthropomorphic animals sitting in cubicles, staring at computer screens. Sad but true. Anyway, because Noah the Boa had zero web presence, I had my brother scan the pages and I posted them on my blog. Nothing happened for a few months and then, blam! I get entangled in an Internet buzz.

One smart editor at Defamer must have been reminded of Noah the Boa from their ethnically insensitive childhood when they heard about the upcoming Samuel L. Jackson flop, "Snakes on a Plane." A google search would have turned up the only place on the web where Noah the Boa can be found, Noah Stone, the Blog, and linked to me. So, yesterday I got 3,000 visits from Defamer readers as well as cinematical. I'm starting to understand it. There's a Newsweek article this week called "Snakes on a What?" This is a movie that has the balls to call itself what it is... Well, actually it should be called "Snakes Go Direct to Video."

Snakes on a plane, man. Snakes on a plane.

Metablogging: Defamer links to me.

I was wondering why I was getting thousands of visits to my blog today. Defamer Every once in a while when no one's looking, you do it, too.

I came across an old episode of KCRW's Which Way L.A.? from the early days of the Napster controversy (May 2000, in fact). Give it a listen.

And here's a link to a panel I did at Georgetown Law School in 2001 with former White House chief of staff, John Podesta.

Here's a review of a show from 1999 I did with a few other songwriters. The choice bit: "Stone, the last of the members to perform, was the definite highlight, however. With a style heavily indebted to Bob Dylan, he was both charismatic and smooth behind his guitar and harmonica. With songs that were both amusing and forceful, he shone in a fashion that each of the others approached, but never quite mastered." Damn.

Someone has blogged a few of my photos with some very kind words: "Every once in awhile I come across a site that blows me away for one reason or another. There are a lot of good sites out there but some make more of an impact than others. Noah Stone has a site that is one of those. His site per se is pretty basic but the photogrpahy he takes - is very emotive. I love all of his dog shots. His Flickr account is actually a better place than his site to look at the images. Check out his dog photos - guaranteed you will find at least one that makes you smile...or 50."
<img width='1' height='1' Hmmm. But it's still okay to use the rack on heretics, right?

Here's a description of some good, old fashioned Vatican torture:

Some victims were horsewhipped. A sharp iron fork was used to mangle breasts. Red hot pincers were used to tear off flesh. Red hot irons were inserted up vaginas and rectums. A device named the turcas was used to tear out fingernails.

After the nails were ripped out needles were shoved into the quicks. Boots called bootikens were used to lacerate flesh and crush bone. Thumbscrews were used to crush the fingers and toes. Acid was poured on victims and hands were immersed into pots of boiling oil and water.

Eyes were gouged out by irons. Alcohol was poured on the head of the poor victim and set alight. Water was poured down the victims throat with a notted cloth. The cloth was then jerked out tearing up the victims bowels.

A surprisingly calm and cogent argument for the existence of God.

This explains everything.

Noah, the Boa Constrictor

My brother named me after Noah, the Boa Constrictor from Richard Scarry's out of print, Busy Busy World. Some of Tubby's flesh flew off to the side of the road, and in time nourished a sunflower growing there. Soon the sunflower was eaten by a horse and the horse was eaten by some hobos out for wild time. Then one of the hobos met an eastward wandering Canadian guru. But before anything significant could happen the hobo died, being attacked by a dog heart in a scientist's laboratory. The death was listed as a heart attack. Then slavery was abolished.

Conclusion: Grandpa died and was resurrected after three days, but no one called him the Son of God; they just said, "Hey, that's Gramps!"

The Peak

 ol' 288
Originally uploaded by noahstone.
Antoine, who sold his first novel told me about the sudden demise of Clark Foam, the company that provides the cores for almost all surfboards. It turns out that the process of making the foam requires toxic chemicals that can not meet pollution standards. The immediate dearth of foam has lit a fire under surfboard manufacturers to find new materials and has punctuated the equilibria of the craft. Antoine implied that there was a correlation to oil supplies and new, clean technology. Unfortunately, running out of oil won't jumpstart the alternative fuel market because we aren't going to just run out. There isn't going to be a day where you go to Chevron and they say, "sorry folks, Chevron is closed for the remainder of humanity."

The reality is oil production is a bell curve. The concept is called Peak Oil. Experts say we reached the peak in 2000 and, therefore, production will be decreasing from here on out. Unfortunately, China and the developing world's thirst for oil is growing, world population will double and demand will continue to increase over the next 15 years. We do not have to run out of oil to have a major global crisis, the price just has to go up, which it most certainly will. And this isn't just about filling your car up with gas; everything in the grocery store, everything on the shelves is there because of oil and everything will cost a lot more when oil does.

The other day the price of oil went up $.60 a barrel and, as a result, Walmart's stock went down 2%. Our entire economy is tied to the price of oil.

Just as with global warming, there are nay-sayers. There are those who disagree with the science or, at least, don't believe we've hit the peak yet. According to the Georgia Institute of Technology, the damage has been done with global warming. Even if we stop polluting now, climate change will persist for a century. How far down the backside of the oil supply bell curve do we have to slide before we make a real commitment to alternative technologies? We need to be honest about what the backside of the bell curve is going to look like. Yes, it will mean $5 a gallon fuel prices for Americans, but it will also mean more war, more starvation and more suffering. Millions of people are going to die and perhaps billions will live in unimaginable squaller as a result of the greed of corporate America and our willful indifference.

I recommend reading Peak Oil: Life After the Oil Crash. It's a doomsday view of the world, so take it for what it is.

And see Syriana.

Sorry this post wasn't funny.

100%

 100%
Originally uploaded by noahstone.
Buddy is 100% again, although he does have a little bald spot on his chest. At least watch the segment on FEMA's rocky history. FEMA was created by Jimmy Carter in 1979. After a decade of no major natural disasters in the U.S., FEMA became a very low priority under Reagan and Bush, Sr. In fact, it became "a parking lot for political appointees." George H. W. Bush appointed Wallace Stickney, a man with no prior emergency management experience to head FEMA. Stickney got the job because he was John Sununu's next door neighbor. Then, in 1992, a category 5 hurricane hit Florida and FEMA fumbled the ball. It took five days for FEMA and the National Guard to arrive on the scene. Every excuse we heard from the Bush Administration after Katrina the previous Bush Administration invented. Bush pushed Stickney to the side and replaced him with Andrew Card, the secretary of Transportation. Card blamed local officials for not asking for help. And then there is the clip of clips, George H. W. Bush saying to the press, "I'm not going to participate in the Blame Game." Amazing!

"I'm not going to participate in the Blame Game." - George H.W. Bush

In 1994, Clinton expelled FEMA of its political appointees and staffed it with experienced state emergency management personnel. He tapped Arkansas's Emergency Management Director, James Lee Witt to head FEMA, the first director in FEMA's history with emergency management experience. Witt transformed the organization and developed a comprehensive plan to work with local communities called Project Impact that not only saved lives, but saved money. In fact, George W. Bush praised Witt and Project Impact during his 2000 campaign for President. As Governor, he worked with Witt and FEMA and saw first hand how well the organization worked. But, as President, Bush returned to the Reagan/Bush tradition of dumping buddies in FEMA. Even so, most of the Clinton-era FEMA was still functioning on 9/11 and FEMA's response was exemplary. After 9/11, Bush demoted FEMA to a subsection of Homeland Security, cut its funding and appointed an Arabian horse judge its Director. The rest is history repeating itself...

Thank you, bunnies.

Someone told me today that the corneal flap made during LASIK surgery never heals. I've been having nightmares that I dislodge a flap doing something stupid, i.e. blowing compressed air from a can directly into my eye (this is a dream, remember). I searched online and according to every source, including the FDA, but not including the TLC Laser Center's website, this is the case. The flap never really heals. In fact, should one need followup LASIK surgery, a new flap will not be created. The doctor simply pulls the old one back.

I did some searching of the public medical journals and read two cases of post-LASIK corneal dislocation due to eye trauma, including a guy who caught a football with his eye - way to keep your eye on the ball, buddy. Both cases required surgery to re-"attach" the corneal flap, but 20/20 vision was restored. That's good news. Here's the better news: The Air Force conducted a study titled, "Laser in situ keratomileusis flap stablility during simulated aircraft ejection in a rabbit model."

In the study, 25 New Zealand white rabbits underwent LASIK corneal flap surgery - they didn't get the laser bit, though - then were subjected to the Air Force cockpit ejection simulator (I bet that's going to show up on some google searches) with 9 G's of force.

Then the little bunnies were euthanized and their eyes were observed for changes. No, that's not the good news, silly, this is: "CONCLUSIONS: Healed LASIK flaps as created in this rabbit model without laser ablation are stable when subjected to a rapid vertical ejection at nine times the force of gravity."

I for one feel much better. Corp. Punishment believes science is flawed because it can't measure ghosts or explain phenomena like this: "a 'medicine woman' (Souix [sic]) walks into a store I work in.. looks into the eyes of my cousin and moves her hand up his body.. stopping at his lower ribcage and says "you were kicked by a horse here when you were 10." (dead on accurate [sic])"

Here's my response:

It is also well understood that the human mind looks for patterns and often sees them even when no clear pattern exists. Essentially, we ignore contrary evidence and place increased significance on supporting evidence. It's like having a dream that your mother goes on a trip and waking up to find out she has died. Most people focus only on that dream and see a pattern. I dreamed she was leaving and she did, therefore my dream foretold her death. But how many dreams of family members leaving on trips, dying or saying cryptic things have not resulted in an actual death? When a dream supports a connection, we tend to forget all the previous dreams that did not.

Same thing perhaps with Corp. Punishment's medicine woman. How many people have encountered your cousin's midsection without "knowing" about the horse kick? Perhaps there was some conversation that tipped her off that you are now forgetting. Magicians use the same trick. David Blaine, for example, can tell you which card you are simply thinking of in your head. When he does this trick, you believe he knows your mind. But, he has manipulated you; he has taken advantage of the way the human mind works. You have willfully forgotten the seemingly insignificant incidents leading up to the trick in which he has "planted" the card in your mind. He waves it in front of you a few times and your subconscious takes note. The "magic" happens and you don't recall the card being shown to you first. The Medicine Woman probably did the same thing. You probably have forgotten the preceding conversation because it seemed at the time totally insignificant, but in reality, she extracted relevant information used to dazzle you.

Message from the President

With the exception of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Will Ferrell was the funniest thing on Earth to America, TBS's global warming comedy show:

click on movie to play.

Berkeley welcomes the Hummer

 berkeley welcomes the hummer
Originally uploaded by noahstone.
Why someone would own a Hummer is beyond my understanding. No other vehicle so embodies a total disregard for other humans. Why someone would own a Hummer in Berkeley and park it on the street can not be understood by anyone until we finally get a unifying theory of physics. I am told the spray paint corroded the glass and the windows have to be replaced. What the fuck did you think would happen, you narcissistic moron?!

To be clear, it's not the Hummer's thirst that gets me; I don't do much better in my car. A major global gas crisis is pending regardless of what we drive. What pisses me off is the absolute disregard for the safety of others. Part of wanting to be in the biggest vehicle on the road is putting your personal safety over the safety of others. With most SUVs, that's not even true, but I'm not getting into that now. The idea is, "if I get into an accident, I don't care if the other guy dies so long as I live." The Hummer is not built to share the road with passenger cars. Its bumper is several feet higher than a sedan's (and knuckle-dragging morons raise them even higher) and its curb weight is 6400 lbs. The curb weight of a Prius is 2890. Is doesn't take much more than a Piagetian grasp of physics to understand what happens when those objects collide at 50 MPH.

I believe there needs to be a test case - someone needs to try a Hummer driver who has been in an accident resulting in the death of the driver or passenger of another vehicle, and, perhaps GM for negligent homicide. They knew when they were buying this car that it would be a threat to others and they didn't care. Their own vanity was more important. And GM knows this car is not fit for the streets of America yet they make it and direct the advertising to American families. Who's with me?

I've been blogged.

By the mother of all bloggers, Dooce. (Great. I've started my blog off with an incomplete sentence. Bravo.) I hadn't known of Dooce, aka Heather Armstrong before; apparently she is a very popular constipated, jack Mormon who was the first blogger to be fired for blogging. Thus "dooce" was added to the cyberlexicon defined as loosing one's job for blogging.

Titled Enjoying, her post included three of my flickr photos:

Within 24 hours, these photos received over 25,000 views each. It was a very exciting moment of mild web celebrity replete with marriage proposals from Manitoba* and Poland*. So I thought that the appropriate thing to do was to start my own blog - to pay it forward, if you will. I mean, the whole concept of a private identity is so, like, 90's.

And thus begins the ravings of yet another Internet lunatic...

*location names may be changed to protect the legally insane.
