Come on...
The winner of American Idol received more votes than any president in the history of the United States.
Why is there a genocide in Africa? Why are global temperatures rising? Why can't there be peace? Look inside yourselves, America.
* Okay, I've looked into it some more. Although he did receive more votes than any American President, people could vote as many times as they liked. Whereas, in the Presidential election, each person can only vote once (expect for Florida and possibly Ohio). Also, it's not totally clear if Taylor Hicks himself received 63 million votes or if all the contestants received 63 million votes total. Anyway, it's not really a fair comparison but I still think Americans have a dangerously undeveloped caring muscle.

I was actually thinking earlier about something semi-related -- wondering whether or not the Angelina Jolie thing on Anderson Cooper/CNN tonight would be one of the highest rated episodes ever...and then realized that it wasn't even a question -- it was a given. My point? You're right.
(which, for the record, doesn't mean I'm not going to tune in!)
